A FORUM FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND VIGOROUS DEBATE, CORNERSTONES OF DEMOCRACY
[For the journal--guidelines, focus, etc.--go to www.theamericandissident.org. If you have questions, please contact me at todslone@hotmail.com. Comments are NOT moderated (i.e., CENSORED)!]
Encouraged censorship and self-censorship seem to have become popular in America today. Those who censor others, not just self, tend to favor the term "moderate," as opposed to "censor" and "moderation" to "censorship." But that doesn't change what they do. They still act as Little Caesars or Big Brother protectors of the thin-skinned. Democracy, however, demands a tough populace, not so easily offended. On this blog, and to buck the trend of censorship, banning, and ostracizing, comments are NEVER "moderated." Rarely (almost NEVER) do the targets of these blog entries respond in an effort to defend themselves with cogent counter-argumentation. This blog is testimony to how little academics, poets, critics, newspaper editors, cartoonists, political hacks, cultural council apparatchiks, librarians et al appreciate VIGOROUS DEBATE, cornerstone of democracy. Clearly, far too many of them could likely prosper just fine in places like communist China and Cuba or Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Russia, not to mention Sweden, England, and Austria.

It does seem like fame and foothold traps go hand in hand.

Good! I hate anonymity. People hide behind it. This is a democracy, where hiding should be shameful. It is not a sharia run autocracy or the former communist Soviet Union, where hiding (samesdat) was certainly understandable considering the penalty.

BTW, Tim, I put this toon up so when Winans fans google the bugger, they'll find it!

I agree. It would make sense to publish anonymously if postulating heliocentrism circa 1500 and living in Italy. But in this day and age it, living in the United States, it seems only the cowards publish anonymously. I am sure there are exceptions to this though.

But If someone is too afraid to post something (under their own name) they believe, then they are usually not the type of person to speak out against corruption at work or anywhere else.

People like that seem like the type that would watch their buddy get fired unjustly and not say a word.

The type that would obey all of the Milgram orders.

I am prone to digression.

My apologies.

G. Tod-i hounded A. d winans for a long time because of a poem he wrote saying lets not try to out Bukowski, while he writes a book Bukowski and the revelution. Then he tells poets to save the money they use for stamps for submitting on the poor, while he's even every little small press mimeo from east to west. He tells writers to take a hiatus to volunteer at shelters while he's busy producing book after book and doing all these readings. Blantant hypocrisy if you ask me.

Tim,
Good words from you! This is indeed the crux: “But If someone is too afraid to post something (under their own name) they believe, then they are usually not the type of person to speak out against corruption at work or anywhere else. People like that seem like the type that would watch their buddy get fired unjustly and not say a word.”
Dave Ochs? Where the hell you been? Send me an email!

the fan site was not created by me nor is it administerd by me.

good to see you are still playing god almighty and as for Dave, sounds like sour grapes jealousy. I worked and retired from a job in civil rights, investigating discrimination against minorities, women and the disabled, and was active in activisit movements in the sixties. He doesn't know shit about me For that matter neither do you. I worked religiously fighting for small presses back in the seventies to the point of being blackballed by the NEA and the California Arts Council. So go ahead and vent if it makes your life happier. As for fame, surely you have to be jesting. There is no fame in the small presses.

No further comment from me because I know you guys feed off it. Time Gobblers as Charles McCabe called you. So gobble away right up to and beyond turkey day. And don't forget the stuffing. A turkey wouldn't be full without it.

Good for you! You actually responded! That of course means my cartoon struck a fat nerve. You poets, you old Beatniks and sellout hippies, cannot bear it when suddenly criticized. But I give you credit just the same for responding because most poets are so buffered by like-minded coterie and laureated fluff they probably never get to see my satirical cartoons. SATIRE!!! How you guys hate it when it’s suddenly directed against you. Poets? Why how dare you criticize us poets! Might as well add politicians to that one! The Sixties? Christ, that was 50 years ago! What about now? Today? So many people live on their past. I don’t care who you were 50 years ago. I care who you are now:.. just another poet immersed in the self-serving push to aggrandize poets and poetry… just another poet who scorns democracy and doesn’t give a goddamn about the censorship effected by his fellow poets. Charles McCabe’s comment is shameful. It places a veil upon vigorous debate, cornerstone of democracy.
