Maya Angelou

Watch out!  Here come the hagiographies... like a landslide of rhyming feces.  When the hack politicians, hack academics, hack literati, and hack newspaper journalists toot their hack horns over a poet, you know damn well that poet was a hack poet, a hack established-order poet of the "beloved" sort.  Maya Angelou just croaked, you know the "caged bird" poet who decided to live cocooned as a caged-academic bird and made more money than she could swallow as a Hallmark Greeting-Card Verse Sellout.  Anyhow, here's a couple of toons I did in 2004 and 2001... early stuff... on that caged bird.  The first one depicts Bill Cosby who dared speak out of PC-party-line format regarding black Americans.  The second one depicts Maya as trustee at Bennett College, where I taught in 2001 and 2 or thereabouts and can be found here:  http://wwwtheamericandissidentorg.blogspot.com/2009/02/american-dissident-sexist-and-racist.html.

To Editor-in-Chief Natalie Williams, Opinion Editor Josh Gachette, the other Student Editors of The Vermont Cynic, as well as Faculty Advisor Chris Evans, University of Vermont: 

Well, the name of your student newspaper is refreshing in this smiley-face day and age where cynicism seems to be scorned, for fear of hurting feelings.  BUT are you really independent questioners and challengers or are you just another PC-media outlet of groupthink?  If you are the former, then why not consider publishing the satirical cartoon sketched on one of your professors, which I just posted on The American Dissident blog site:  wwwtheamericandissidentorg.blogspot.com ?

In fact, why not ask your librarian why he or she does not respond to my request that he or she consider subscribing ($20) to The American Dissident, which unlike most literary journals, does criticize librarians, professors, poets, and universities? 

Over the years, I’ve sketched numerous cartoons on professors and contacted them and their colleagues.  Rare is the professor (and student editor) who responds.  In fact, only one professor has been willing to invite me to his creative writing courses to talk about poetry and The American Dissident.  He’s been inviting me every semester now for the past five years.  Below is what one student had to say about the issue she examined last week.
